Manypeoplewhoareconcernedaboutthefateoftheworld'spoornowattributetheirplighttoglobalization.Theyarguethatglobalizationhasweakenedthepositionofpoorcountriesandexposedpoorpeopletoharmfulcompetition.Theirconcernisunderstandable,especiallysincethegapbetweenrichandpoorhasindeedbecomemoreglaringinrecentdecades.However,provingadirectlinkbetweeneconomicglobalizationandpovertyisacomplextaskforseveralreasons.Bycommonconsent,globalizationhasproceededrapidlysincethe1980s.YetaccordingtotherecentGlobalPovertyReport,theproportionoftheworldpopulationlivinginpovertyhasdeclinedfrom29%in1988to26%in1998.Moreover,socialindicatorsformanypoorcountriesalsoshowimprovementoverseveraldecades.
Overall,globalizationhelpedthepoorcountriesthatadoptedsoundpoliciesandcontributedtoincomeconvergenceamongthecountriesparticipatingintheglobalsystem.However,sincestagnationcontinuedinmanycountriesisolatedfromglobalization,worldinequalitystillrose.
Itistimeforopponentsandproponentsofglobalizationtojoinforcestohelplow-incomecountriesexpandtheiraccesstorichcountrymarketsanddevelopandnurturetheirgoverninginstitutionssothattheworld'spoorgainfromthebenefitsofamoreintegratedworld.
