Sleepanddreamshaveinterestedpeopleforcenturies.Scientistsarelearningmoreaboutsleep,buttheystillknowverylittleaboutwhywedream.
Modernresearchcantellussomeimportantthingsaboutdreams.First,wehavemostofourdreamsduringREM(RapidEyeMovement)sleep.Atthistime,thebrainisveryactive.Second,everyonedreams–evenifwecannotrememberdoingsowhenweawaken.Finally,apartofourbrainhelpsustounderstanddailyexperienceswehave.Whileweareasleep,itworksmoreslowly,andsometimesputsourthoughtsandmemoriestogetherinstrangeways.
Althoughscientistsdonotknowforcertainwhywedream,somebelievethatourdreamsareassociatedwiththoughtsandfeelingsthatweexperience(经历)whileweareawake.Manydreamresearchersthinkthatadreamaboutdeath,forexample,isreallyaboutanimportantlifechange.Dreamsabouttelephonesarethoughttobeaboutgivingorreceivinganimportantmessage.Dreamsaboutacarortraveloftenrepresent(表示)feelingsaboutyourownlife.Dreamsaboutteeth–especiallybrokenorlooseonesmayindicate(表明)stress(紧张)andfear.Dreamsinwhichyouareflyingoftenrepresentfreedom(自由)orescape(逃跑).
