In1278theYuanDynastyestablished LijiangPrefecture(自治州)representingtheimperialcourtinYunnanProvince.ThisresultedincloserlinksbetweentheLijiangareaandthecentreoftheempire.
IntheearlyMingDynastytheleaderoftheNaxipeople,namedMudewasmadechiefofLijiangPrefectureexercisingcontrolovertheNaxiandotherethnicgroupsnearby.ThroughouttheMingDynastythechiefsfromtheMufamilykepttaxesandtribute(贡品)flowingtotheMingcourtintheformofsilverandgrain.TheMinginturnreliedontheMufamilyasthemainstayforthecontrolofthepeopleofvariousethnicgroupsinnorthwesternYunnanProvince.
