InAmericadrivers'educationispartoftheregularhighschoolcurriculum.Everystudentinhisorhersecondyearofhighschoolisrequiredtotakeaclassindriver'seducation.Howeverunlikeothercoursesitisnotgivenduringtheregularschoolyear.Insteaditisasummercourse.
Thecourseisdividedupintotwoparts:classtimeforlearninglawsandregulationsanddrivingtimetopracticedriving.Classtimeisnotunlikeanyotherclass.Thestudentshaveatextfromwhichtheystudythebasiclawstheymustknowtopassthewrittendrivingtestthatisgiventoanyonewantingtogetadriver'slicense.
Drivingtimeisachanceforthestudentstogetbehindthewheel(steeringwheel)andpracticestartingsteeringbackingupparkingswitchinglanesturningcomersandalltheothermaneuvers(操作)requiredtodriveacar.Eachstudentisrequiredtodriveatotalofsixhours.Thestudentsaredividedupintogroupsoffour.Thestudentsandtheinstructorgooutdrivingfortwo-hourblocksoftime.Thuseachstudentgetshalfanhourdrivingtimeperouting.Theinstructorand“driver”sitinthefrontseatsandtheotherthreestudentssitintheback.
DriversEdcarsareunlikeothercarsinwhichtheyhavetwosetsofbrakesoneonthedriver'ssideandoneontheothersidewheretheinstructorsits.Thusifthestudentdrivershouldrunintodifficultiestheinstructorcantakeover.Thecaralsohasanotherspecialfeature.Onthetopofthecarisasignthatreads:STUDENTDRIVER.Thatletsnearbydriversknowthattheyshoulduseextracaution(小心)becausethestudentdriverisabeginningdrivernotveryexperiencedandpronetodrivingslowly.
Afterthestudenthaspassedthedriver'seducationcourseandreachedtheappropriateagetodrive(thisagediffersineverystatebutinmostcasesthepersonmustbe16yearsold)theycangotoadesignatedstateofficetotaketheirdriver'stestwhichismadeupofaneyeexaminationawrittentestandaroadtest.Thepersonmustpassallthreetestsinordertobegivenadriver'slicense.Ifthepersondidwellinhisorherdriver'seducationclassheorshewillpassthetestwithflyingcolorsandgetadriver'slicense.
