In1919,GermanstudentAbrahamwasmatriculatedbytheCambridgeUniversity,buthedidn’tlivehappilythere,ashewasaJew.Hewasdespisedbyotherstudents,andevenhisteacherlookeddownuponhim.Butforlearningmorethings,hecontinuedstudyingattheuniversity.
AftertheFirstWorldWar,thegovernmentfoundEnglishyoungmen’sphysiquewasverybad.SotheuniversityofferedP.E.lessonstothestudents,andrunningwasoneofthemostimportantpartsofit.Withasurprise,Abrahamfoundhimselffeelfreeformworrywhenrunning.Whenhefeltunhappy,hewentrunning.Andhewasoneofthebestrunnersintheuniversity.
Eventhoughtheraneverfast,hedidn’tgetridofothers’disdain.Thenhebegantoperplexed,unknowingifitwasrighttogetrespectfromothersbyrunning.SoatthelastweekendofFebruaryin1920,hedecidednottorunanymoreafterthelasttime.However,onthatday,hemetLiddell.
LiddellwasacommonyoungEnglishman,andhelikedrunning,too.AbrahamtoldLiddellthathehaddecidedtogiveuprunning,butLiddellsaidwhenyourstrongpointisn’tacceptedbyothers,that’sbecauseyouhaven’tdonewellenough.Inotherwords,whenyouarejustabitbetterthanothers,theywithdespiseyouwithenvyingsight;butwhenyouarebetterthanothersalot,theywillonlyadmireyou.
Hearingthis,Abrahamstrengthenedhisresolveandgoonrunning.HeandLiddellranontheschoolplaygroundeveryday,nomatterwhathappened.
Intheyear1924,theOlympicGameswereholdinParis.Theywerebothchosentotakepartinit,becauseofthereexcellentmarksintheircountry.
Theresultswereexciting.Abrahamwonthefirstprizeofmen100-mererrace,andLiddellwonthefirstprizeofmen400-meterrace.Afterthecompetitions,reportersinterviewedthetwolegendaryrunners.ThenAbrahamsaid:“Ifyoudon’tshowrespecttome,pleaseshowrespecttomysteps.”
