FrankLinofJohnsHopkinsSchoolofMedicineandcolleaguestestedthehearingof1984olderadults.Mostoftheparticipantswhoaveraged77yearsoldshowedsomehearingloss—1162volunteershadtroublehearingnoisesoflessthan25decibelscomparabletoawhisperorrustlingleaves.Thevolunteers;deficitsreflectthehearinglossinthegeneralpopulation:Overhalfofpeopleolderthan70havetroublehearing.
Overthenextsixyearstheseparticipantsunderwentmentalevaluationsthatmeasuredfactorssuchasshort-termmemoryattentionandtheabilitytoquicklymatchnumberstosymbols.Everybodygotworseatthetasksastimeworeonbutpeoplewithhearinglosshadanespeciallysharpdeclinetheteamfound.Onaverageasubstantialdropinperformancewouldcomeaboutthreeyearsearliertopeoplewithhearingloss.
Lincautionsthatthestudyhasfoundanassociationbetweenhearinglossandmentalabilities;theresearcherscan'tconcludethathearinglossdirectlycausesthedecline.Yetmoreandmorestudiesareturningupwaysthatdiminishedhearingcoulddamagethebrain.
