ChineseNewYear,a.k.a.SpringFestival(SimplifiedChinese:春节;TraditionalChinese:春节;pinyin:Chūnjié)ortheLunarNewYear(SimplifiedChinese:农历新年;TraditionalChinese:农历新年;pinyin:Nónglìxīnnián),isthemostimportantofthetraditionalChineseholidays.Thefestivalproperbeginsonthefirstdayofthefirstlunarmonth(Chinese:正月;pinyin:zhēngyuè)intheChinesecalendarandendsonthe15th;thisdayiscalledLanternFestival(SimplifiedChinese:元宵节;TraditionalChinese:元宵节;pinyin:yuánxiāojié).
ChineseNewYear'sEveisknownasChúxì(除夕).Chuliterallymeans"change"andximeans"Eve".
CelebratedinternationallyinareaswithlargepopulationsofethnicChinese,ChineseNewYearisconsideredamajorholidayfortheChineseandhashadastronginfluenceonthenewyearcelebrationsofitsneighbours.TheseincludeKoreans,Vietnamese,Mongolians,theNepalese,theBhutanesebutnolongertheJapanesesince1873.
IncountriessuchasSingapore,Malaysia,ThePhilippines,Thailand,andothercountrieswithsignificantChinesepopulations,theLunarNewYearisalsocelebrated,largelybyethnicChinese,butitisnotpartofthetraditionalculturesofthesecountries.InThailand,forexample,thetrueNewYearcelebrationoftheethnicThaisisSongkran,whichistotallydifferentandiscelebratedinApril.
TheperiodaroundChineseNewYearisalsothetimeofthelargesthumanmigration,whenmigrantworkersinChina,aswellasoverseasChinesearoundtheworldtravelhometohavereuniondinnerswiththeirfamiliesonChineseNewYear'seve.MoreinterurbantripsaretakeninmainlandChinainthis40-dayperiodthanthetotalpopulationofChina.
