Theword"boycott"meanstorefusetohaveanythingtodowithsomebodyorsomething.Itcomesfrom amancalledCaptainBoycott.Hewasalandagentin1880andhecollectedrentsandtaxesforanEnglish landownerinIreland.ButtheCaptainwasaveryharsh(苛刻的)man.Hetreatedhispoortenants(佃户)very badly.Histenantsdecidednottospeaktohimatall.Eventuallywordgotbacktothelandownerandthe Captainwasremoved(免除).Theword"boycott"becamepopularandwasusedbyeveryonetomeanthekind oftreatmentthatwasreceivedbyCaptainBoycott. |
