Beforetheearly1960’speopleinterestedinthedifferingrolesoftheleftandrighthemispheres(半球)ofthebraindependedalmostentirelyonfactsdrawnfromanimalresearch,formstudiesofpatientswithone-sidedbraindamage.Butitwaspossibletofindoutwhichbrainhemispherewasmostinvolvedinspeechandotherfunctionsinnormalpeoplebyhavingthemlistentotwodifferentwordscomingtothetwoearsatthesametime.Thisbecameknownasthe“dichoticlistening”procedure.Whenseveralwordpairsaregiveninarow,peopleareunabletoreportthemall,andmostright-handersprefertoreport,andreportmorecorrectly,wordsgiventotheirrightears.Thisseemstoberelatedtothefactthatsignalsfromtherightear,althoughsenttobothhemispheres,arebettersenttothelefthemispherewhichcontrolsspeech.Peoplewhohavespeechrepresented(回忆)intherighthemisphere,averyunusualoccurrenceeveninleft-handedpeople,morecorrectlyreportwhattheirleftearshear. |
