TheseniorWestGermanscientistinchargeoftheCommunity'ssolarenergyprogramme,Mr.JoachimGretz,toldjournaliststhatatpresentlevelsofresearchspendingitwasmostunlikelythatsolarenergywouldprovideasmuchas3%oftheCommunity'senergyrequirementsevenaftertheyear2000.Buthesaidthatwithamodestincreaseinthepresentsums,devotedbytheEECtothisworkitwaspossiblethatthebreakthroughcouldbeachievedbytheendofthenextdecade.
Mr.Gretzcalculatesthatifsolarenergyonlyprovided3%oftheEEC'sneeds,thiscouldstillproduceasavingofaboutabillionpoundsinthepresentbillforimportedenergyeachyear.AndhebelievesthatwiththepossibilityofutilizingmoreadvancedtechnologyinthisfielditmightbepossibletosatisfyamuchbiggershareoftheCommunity'sfutureenergyneeds.
AtpresenttheEECspendsabout$2.6millionsayearonsolarresearchatIspra,oneoftheEEC'sofficialjointresearchcentres,andanother3millionsayearinindirectresearchwithuniversitiesandotherindependentbodies.
