Earthmovingplantshallnotbeacceptedascompactionequipmentnorshalltheuseofa
lightercategoryofplanttoprovideanypreliminarycompactiontoassisttheuseof
heavierplantbetakenintoaccountwhenassessingtheamountofcompactionrequired
foranylayer.
ForthepurposesofTable15.21thefollowingshallapply:
(i)ThecompactionplantinTable15.21iscategorisedintermsofstaticmass.
Themasspermetrewidthofrollisthetotalmassontherolldividedbythe
totalrollwidth.Whereasmoothwheeledrollerhasmorethanoneaxlethe
categoryofthemachineshallbedeterminedonthebasisoftheaxlegiving
thehighestvalueofmasspermetrewidth.
(ii)Adeadweighttampingrollerisamachinewitharollorrollsfromwhich‘feet’
projectandwheretheprojectedendareaofeach‘foot’exceeds0.01m2and
thesumoftheareasofthefeetexceeds15%oftheareaofthecylinder
sweptbytheendsofthefeet.Therequirementsfortampingrollersapplyto
machinesthathave2rollsintandem.Ifonlyonetampingrolltraverseseach
pointonthesurfaceofthelayeronanyonepassofthemachine,the
minimumnumberofpassesshallbetwicethenumbergiveninTable15.21
plusanyfurtherdoublingrequiredtosatisfy(i)above.
(iii)Avibratorytampingroller,whichmaybeself-propelledortowed,isa
machinehavingameansofapplyingmechanicalvibrationtooneormore
rolls.Therollorrollshaveprojectingfeetwheretheheightofeachfoot
exceeds10%oftheradiusoftherolldrum,theprojectedendareaofeach
footexceeds0.1%oftherolldrumsurfacearea,andthesumoftheareasof
thefeetexceeds10%oftheareaofthecylindersweptbytheendsofthe
feet.Therequirementsfortheoperationofvibratorytampingrollersshallbe
thesameasthosestatedforvibratoryrollersinsub-Clause(v)belowexcept
thatvibratorytampingrollersoperatingwithoutvibrationwillbeclassifiedas
deadweighttampingrollers.
