Hisgrandfatherandfatherwerecivilengineering,madegreatachievementsinthelighthouseconstruction.AndtheywishedthatStevensonwouldtakeovertheirownenterprise.In1867,Stevensonreceivedhisfather’sdecreetoentertheEdinburghUniversitytostudycivilengineering.Infact,helovedliteraturewhenhewasachild.Soheaskedhisfathertostudyliterature,andwasrefused.Buthisfatherlethimstudylaw.
In1878,Stevensonpublishedhisfirsttravelnotes"InlandriverRange".Ayearlater,hepublished"Jilvroaminginmind"and"Manandthecasualtheory".Sincethen,hegaveuphisbusinesslawyer,writingwithgreatconcentration.Inashortperiodofhislife,hewrotealargenumberofessays,travelogues,essays,novelsandpoems.
1894,only44-year-oldStevensonsuddenlysufferedfromstroke,anddiedofillnessinthePacificsouthofthecapital,Apia,WesternSamoaandwasburiedinthelocalmountainsoverlookingthePacific.
