SenseandsensibilityisanovelwrittenbyJaneAustenthatwasfirstpublishedin1811.whentalkingaboutJaneAusten,IcansayconfidentlythatIhaveagoodknowledgetoher.She(16December1775-18July1817)wasanEnglishnovelistwhoseworksofromanticfiction,setamongthelandedgentry,earnedheraplaceasoneofthemostwidelyreadwritersinEnglishliterature,herrealismandbitingsocialcommentarycementingherhistoricalimportanceamongscholarsandcritics.Inhershortandgloriouslife,shewroteaboutdozensoffamousnovels,suchassenseandsensibility,prideandprejudice,Mansfieldpark,Emmaandsoon.WhenIwasahighschoolstudent,IhadoncereadtheChineseversionofprideandprejudice,throughthisnovel,IhaveapreliminaryunderstandingofJaneAusten’svisionoflove,andrealizethelifeofBritishgirlinthatperiod,butnotdeep,while,IamreallyengagedinthestyleofJaneAusten’snovel,andyearnforadeepunderstandingofhernovel,theerashelived,sowhentheteacheraskedustoreadaEnglishnovel,IchosesenseandsensibilitywrittenbyJaneAusten.
Thestoryinthisbookconcernstwosister,ElinorandMarianneDashwood(Elinorrepresents“sense”andMarianneis“sensibility”).Alongwiththeirmotherandyoungsister,theywereevictfromtheirresidenceNorlandParkafterthedeathoftheirfather,theymovedtoacountrycottageofferedbyagenerousrelativewithonotherchoice.
Beforetheymovedoutoftheirformerresidence,ElinorfellinlovewiththegentlemanEdwardFerrarswhowashersister-in-law’sbrother,unfortunately,shewasunwareoftheengagementbetweenEdwardandLucy,afterhearingthatbadnews,insteadofanger,despair,sheshowedhercalmandsense,toEdward,sheexpressedherunderstandingandbelief.Actually,Elinorwasavirtuousgirl,senseisakindofinnercharacterofher,shewasgenerous,gentle,calmandpolitetoallthepeoplearoundher,includingthepeoplewhohurtedher,suchasLucy.Concerninglove,ElinoralsozealousintheaffairbetweenEdwardandher,becauseofherbelief,toleranceandsense,shefinallywonahappyend,andgotmarriedwithherloverEdward.
Mariannealsowasavirtuous,withpassionandfansaty,shealwaysdreamedonedaythatshecanmarryahandsomegentleandrichman.Aftertheirmove,MariannemetWilloughby,adashingyoungmanwholeadedherintoundisciplinedbehaviour,sothatsheignoredthefaithful(butalotolder)gentlemanColonelBrandon.Unfortunately,WilloughbywasagreedyandunchastemanwhofinallydiscardedMariannethenmarriedarichlady.Mariannewasinconsolable,andnearlydied,duringthistime,ColonelBrandonaccompaniedwithher,andfacedandconqueredeverydifficultytogether.ShewaseventuallymovedbyColonelBrandon,andfinallyrealizedthehewasthepersonthatshecanentrustlifelong.
ComparedwithElinor,Marianne’ssuffering,notonlybringsagonytoherself,butalsothepeoplewhoaroundandcareabouther.ThereasonunderliesthisconsequenceisthesensibilityexitsinMarianne’sinnercharacter.Therefore,wecanseetransparentlythatsenseisaveryimportantprincipleinourdailylife.
