Ihavebeenteachingforseventeenyearsnow.ForthelastthreeyearsIhavebeenteachingthesecondgradeatWashingtonElementarySchool.MostofwhathappensonthefirstdayofschooleveryyearisnotnewformebecauseIhavebeendoingitfortoolong.ButIstillapproacheachnewschoolyeardifferently.
OnewaythateachyearisdifferentisthatIalwayshopethateachyear’snewstudentswillbedifferent.Ihopethatthisyear’sstudentswillbesmarter,betterbehaved,andmorereadytosettledownandstartactingasthoughtheyareinschoolandnotonvacation.Ialsohopethatthenewstudentswillnotcry,willhavetheirlunchmoney,andwillknowwhatbustheyaresupposedtotaketogethomeorwhethertheirparentswillbepickingthemup.
AnotherwayIhopenewschoolyearswillbedifferentisthatIhopeIwillbebetterprepared.IknowthatIhavestartedschoolyearsbefore,soIshouldbereadytohelpthestudentsorganizetheirsuppliesandputthemintheblueandredstorageboxesatthebackoftheroom.Ishouldbereadyforthechildrentogettiredandstarttofallasleepbytwoo’clockinthelongafternoon.Ishouldbereadytocheckthatthestudentscanwritetheirnamesandcanrecognizetheirnameswhentheyseethem.
ButIamalwayssurprisedatthebeginningofschool.Thisyear,forexample,Ihadtwenty-threenewstudents.Onthefirstday,sixofthemhadforgottentobringlunchmoneyanddidnothavelunchesoftheirown.Ihadtolendthemmoneysotheycouldeatinthecafeteria.Mostofthemknewhowtogetbackhome,butonelittleboy,Manfred,gotonthewrongbus,andIhadtopickhimupanddrivehimhome.Hecriedalltheway.
Iwasalsosurprisedthisyearwhenthreeofthestudentsdidnotseemtobeabletoread,andoneofthemwouldnotwritehername.Ihadgiventhemeasybookstoreadafterlunch,whileIwastryingtomakeupsomelistsofstudents’namesfortheoffice.Inoticedthatthreechildrenwerelookingatthepicturesinthebookbutnotatthewriting.Istoppedandaskedthemwhattheywerereading,buttheydidnotseemtoknow.Ihopethattheywerejustconfusedandafraidonthefirstdayofschoolandthattheywillbeabletoreadalongwiththeotherchildren.
