Whenitcomestothefoodsafetyincidents,especially2008Chinesemilkscandal,everyconsumerhasmuchangertopouruponthem.InSeptember2008,afreshoutbreakofkidneydiseaseoccurred,duetobabyformulacontaminatedbymelamine.Threebabiesdiedandover6,000weremadesickbythetaintedformula.Thesupplierofthemilk,SanluGroup,isanamebrandandisamajorplayerintheindustryinChina.Thecompanyissaidtohaveknownoftheproblemformonths,butclaimsthecontaminantcamefrommilksuppliers.
Whoshouldbemainresponsiblefortheseseriousincidentslikemilkscandal?Ononehand,complexChina’sfoodregulationsshouldshoulderpartduties.Weshouldrealizeditsmonitoringsystemcanbeunresponsive,andthegovernmentdepartmentsthatoverseeandenforcepolicieshaveoverlappingandoftenambiguousduties.Ontheother,foodproducersandsupplierslackdeservedresponsibilityforconsumers!Whattheycaresisonlytheirowninterestandprofitmaximization.
Inmyopinion,everyoneinvolvedinitshouldsetupahighresponsibilityforothers,lawrelatedshouldbepassedandcarriedout.Onlyinthiswaycanwecomebyahealthyeatingandaharmoniousworld.
