Itwasnotaneasyprocess.Vosswasactuallypassedoverwhenhefirstappliedfortheastronautprogramin1978.Overthenextnineyearshereappliedrepeatedly,andwasfinallyacceptedin1987.Sincethenhehasparticipatedinthreespacemissions.The50yearoldArmyofficer,wholivesinHouston,isnowintrainingforafour-monthmissionasacrewmemberontheInternationalSpaceStationstartinginJuly2000.
VosssaystheASEEprogramiswonderfulforallinvolved.“ItbringsinpeoplefromtheacademicworldandgivesNASAaspecialpropertyforaparticularperiodoftime.ItbringssomefresheyesandfreshideastoNASA,andestablishesalinkwithourcollegesanduniversities,”Vossexplains.“There'sanexchangeofinformationandanexchangeofperspectivesthatisveryimportant.”
Fortheacademicside,Vosssays,theASEEprogramalso“bringsinstitutionsofhigherlearningmoreinsightintonewtechnology.Wegivethemanopportunitytoworkonrealworldproblemsandtakeitbacktotheclassroom.”
