In2000YocumandBellfoundthisbuildinginthecity’sWestEnd.Builtin1947thestructurehadbeenabandonedyearsearlierandtheroofofthemainbuildinghadfallendown.ButthepricewasrightsoYocumboughtit.Hespenteightmonthsofhisoff-hoursondemolition(拆除)pullingrubbishoutthroughtheroofbecauseitwastoodangeroustogoinsidethebuilding.Thedemolitionwashardworkbutitgavehimtimetothinkaboutwhathewantedtodoand“totreasurewhatwasthere—thewallstherustthelight”Yocumsaid.“Everyseasonmorepaintfallsoffthewallsandmorerustdevelops.It’slikeanartinstallation(装置)there---aslow-motionshow.”
Sincethebackbuildinghadbeenconstructedwithoutwindowsanall-glassfrontwasaddedtothebuildingtogiveitaviewofthecourtyardandskylightswereinstalledintheroof.ThebackofthebuildingisaworkingareaandalivingroomforYocumandhiswife.Asortofbuffer(缓冲)zonebetweenthefrontandthebackcontainsabathroomakitchenandamechanicalroomandthewallsthatseparatethesezoneshaveopeningsthatallowviewsthroughtothefrontofthestudioandthecourtyardbeyond.
