EmilyBrontëdiedoftuberculosisinthelate1848.ShehadcaughtcoldatherbrotherBranwell'sfuneralinSeptember.AftertheappearanceofWutheringHeighs,someskepticsmaintainedthatthebookwaswrittenbyBranwell,onthegroundsthatnowomanfromsuchcircumscribedlife,couldhavewrittensuchpassionatestory.In1848CharlotteandAnnevisitedGeorgeSmithtorevealtheiridentityandtohelpquellrumorsthatasingleauthorlaybehindthepseudonyms.Afterhersisters'deaths,Charlotteeditedasecondeditionoftheirnovels,withprefatorycommentaryaimedatcorrectingwhatshesawasthereviewers'misunderstandingofWutheringHeights.Thecomplextimeschemeofthenovelhadbeentakenasevidencebythecritics,thatEmilyhadnotachievedfullformalcontroloverhernarrativematerials.However,hermodelinlayeringnarrativewithinnarrativemayhavebeenMaryShelley'sFrankenstein(1818).Emily'srefusaltoreduceambiguitytosimplisticclaritydidnothaveanyimmediateinfluenceonthenovelformuntilWilkieCollinsexperimentedwithmultivocalfirst-personnarrativesinsuchworksasTheWomaninWhite(1860)andTheMoonstone(1868).
