TheStatueofLiberty(LibertyEnlighteningtheWorld,French:LaLibertééclairantlemonde)isacolossalneoclassicalsculptureonLibertyIslandinNewYorkHarbor,designedbyFrédéricBartholdianddedicatedonOctober28,1886.Thestatue,agifttotheUnitedStatesfromthepeopleofFrance,isofarobedfemalefigurerepresentingLibertas,theRomangoddessoffreedom,whobearsatorchandatabulaansata(atabletevokingthelaw)uponwhichisinscribedthedateoftheAmericanDeclarationofIndependence.Abrokenchainliesatherfeet.ThestatuehasbecomeaniconoffreedomandoftheUnitedStates.
BartholdiwasinspiredbyFrenchlawprofessorandpoliticianÉdouardRenédeLaboulaye,whocommentedin1865thatanymonumentraisedtoAmericanindependencewouldproperlybeajointprojectoftheFrenchandAmericanpeoples.DuetothetroubledpoliticalsituationinFrance,workonthestatuedidnotcommenceuntiltheearly1870s.In1875,LaboulayeproposedthattheFrenchfinancethestatueandtheAmericansprovidethepedestalandthesite.Bartholdicompletedboththeheadandthetorch-bearingarmbeforethestatuewasfullydesigned,andthesepieceswereexhibitedforpublicityatinternationalexpositions.ThearmwasdisplayedinNewYork'sMadisonSquareParkfrom1876to1882.Fundraisingproveddifficult,especiallyfortheAmericans,andby1885workonthepedestalwasthreatenedduetolackoffunds.PublisherJosephPulitzeroftheWorldinitiatedadrivefordonationstocompletetheproject,andthecampaigninspiredover120,000contributors,mostofwhomgavelessthanadollar.ThestatuewasconstructedinFrance,shippedoverseasincrates,andassembledonthecompletedpedestalonwhatwasthencalledBedloe'sIsland.Thestatue'scompletionwasmarkedbyNewYork'sfirstticker-tapeparadeandadedicationceremonypresidedoverbyPresidentGroverCleveland.
ThestatuewasadministeredbytheUnitedStatesLighthouseBoarduntil1901andthenbytheDepartmentofWar;since1933ithasbeenmaintainedbytheNationalParkService.Thestatuewasclosedforrenovationformuchof1938.Intheearly1980s,itwasfoundtohavedeterioratedtosuchanextentthatamajorrestorationwasrequired.Whilethestatuewasclosedfrom1984to1986,thetorchandalargepartoftheinternalstructurewerereplaced.AftertheSeptember11attacksin2001,itwasclosedforreasonsofsafetyandsecurity;thepedestalreopenedin2004andthestatuein2009,withlimitsonthenumberofvisitorsallowedtoascendtothecrown.Thestatueisscheduledtocloseforuptoayearbeginninginlate2011sothatasecondarystaircasecanbeinstalled.Publicaccesstothebalconysurroundingthetorchhasbeenbarredforsafetyreasonssince1916.
