InJune1971JapanandtheUnitedStatessignedanagreementtohandoverOkinawatoJapan.TheDiaoyuIslandsweremappedintothehandoverarea.

China’sForeignMinistryannouncedonDecember30th1971thatsuchamovewas"totallyillegal"andreiterated(重申)thattheDiaoyuIslandsandsurroundingisletswere"anintegralpartoftheChineseterritory".
