DorothytaughtinaschoolinHarlanCountyKentuckyAppalachianMountainarea.TogettoherschoolfromthetownofHarlanIfollowedaroadwindingaroundthemountain.IntheeightmilejourneyIcrossedthesamerailroadtrackfivetimesgivingthepossibilityofgettingcaughtbythesametrainfivetimes.RatherthanfeelingexcitedbythisdrivethroughthemountainsIfounditdepressing.Thepovertylevelwasshockingandthesmallshabbyhousesgavemethegreatestfeelingofhopelessness.
