Abstract
Nightventilationhasbeenappliedsuccessfullytomanypassively-cooledorlow-energyofficebuildings.Thispaperinvestigatestheapplicabilityofnightventilationinair-conditionedofficebuildings.Athermalandventilationsimulationmodel,togetherwithsuitableweatherdatawereusedtoexaminethepotentialforenergysavingsand/orimprovedinternalcomfortconditionsbyapplyingnightventilationcooling.Itwasfoundthatnaturalventilationstrategiescouldsavecoolingenergyintypicalair-conditionedoffices.However,theuseofmechanicalventilationcouldleadtoincreasedenergy-consumption.Iftypicalofficesaremodifiedtoincorporatefeaturesassistingtheapplicationofnightventilation,thencoolingenergycouldbesavedwhenmechanicalventilationisusedandfurtherreducedinthecaseofnaturalventilation.Suchfeatureswouldincludeexposedthermalmassorofficesdesignedto‘bestpractice’guidelines,suchasairtightconstructionandminimisationofinternalandsolarheatgains
