Thestorylooksatfamiliargroundfromadifferentpointofview,withallofthebustleandpreparationofalargeweddingseenthroughtheeyesofthemanwhohastopayforitalldespitehavingnothingtosayabouttheproceedings.Mostofitispresentedinadeliberatelylow-keystyle,butthisdoesnotpreventsomeofthesequencesfrombeingparticularlyfunny.Italsoworksasagood-naturedsatireonthefrequentlynonsensicalsideofthenumeroussocialconventionsinvolved.
Atthispointofhercareer,Taylorwasanaturalforthepart,givingtheroleplentyofyouthfulenergywhilekeepingthecharacterbothbelievableandsympathetic.Forhispart,Tracywasanidealchoice,sincehisabilitytoprojectsincerityandbafflementatthesametimemakesthewholeplotmoreamusingandmoreconvincingatthesametime.(Inthe1990sremake,SteveMartinwasfunny,asusual,butTracy'smoreunderstatedapproachisevenbetter.)
Thismovieisagoodexampleofafairlysimpleconceptthatworkswellandisenjoyabletowatch.EvenforthosewhohaveneverbeeninthesamepositionasTracy'scharacter,it'seasytorelateto,inpartbecausethecustomsaresofamiliar,andevenmoresobecauseTracyissobelievableasthiskindofdown-to-earthcharacterfacingthemanyperilsofwhat'normal'lifehastooffer.
