ControllingofmorphologyofNi/Al-LDHsusingmicroemulsionmediated
hydrothermalsynthesis
Abstract.Aquaternarymicroemulsion,cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide(CTAB)/water/n-hexane/nhexanol,
wasselectedforthesynthesisofNi/Al-layereddoublehydroxides(LDHs).Ni/Al-LDHswith
nanowire-,spherical-,rod-andtube-likemorphologieswerepreparedviathemicroemulsion-mediatedhydrothermal
synthesis.TheCTABconcentrationplayedanimportantroleindeterminingthemorphologyofNi/Al-
LDHs.Thestructure,compositionandmorphologyoftheobtainedNi/Al-LDHnanostructureswereinvestigated
byX-raydiffraction,inductivelycoupledplasmaemissionspectroscopy,infraredspectrometerandtransmission
electronmicroscopy.ApossibleformationmechanismofNi/Al-LDHnanostructuresisproposed

Layereddoublehydroxides(LDHs)areagroupofsynthetic

etal2002).Theyhavealayeredstructure,withpositively
chargedbrucite-likesheets,whereMII
andMIIIareoctahedrally
coordinated.Theexcesschargeisbalancedby
anionsasCO2

3situatedintheinterlayer.
LDHsthemselveshaveattractedagreatdealofinterestas
anionexchangers,ionicconductors,andadditivesfor
variouspolymersandotherfunctionalmaterials(Cavani
etal1991;Zhaoetal2003).Mixedoxidesobtainedfrom
theLDHprecursorshavebeenfoundtohaveapplication
asadsorbents,catalysts,andpigments,aswellasusefulness
insensorandmagnetictechnologies(LeeandLee
2002;Zhaoetal2002,2005).Duetotheimportanceof
composition,sizeandmorphologyonthesefunctions,it
isofparticularimportancethatresearchintothenanostructure
oftheLDHsbeperformed.
