Multi-loopAntennaforHighFrequencyRFIDSmartShelfApplicationXianmingQing*,ZhiNingChen,AilianCaiInstituteforInfocommResearch,Singapore20ScienceParkRoad,#02-21/25TeleTechPark,ScienceParkII,Singapore117674E-mail:{qingxm,chenzn,alcai}@i2r.a-star.edu.sgIntroductionThepasttwoyearshavewitnessedanexplosionofinterestinradio-frequencyidentification(RFID)andsupportingtechnologies,primarilyduetotheirrapidexpandinguseintrackinggroceryproductsthroughthesupplychain.RFIDtechnologyisexpectedtoimproveautomation,inventorycontrol,andcheckoutoperationsinstores,factories,andwarehouse.Currently,supermarketsandotherretailersacrosstheworldareplanninglarge-scaleitem-leveldeploymentsoftheRFIDsystemsforconsumergoods.LeadingretailerssuchasWal-Mart,Marks&Spencer,Tesco,Metro,ColesMyerandMitsukoshietc.areimplementingRFIDsolutionsfortheirsupplychainmanagement.Theincreasingdemandspursthedevelopmentofso-called“RFIDSmartShelf”.Besidesforretailapplication,smartshelfisalsoexpectedtobeappliedinlibrariestomanagelargevolumesofbooksandothermedia,inpharmaceuticalindustrytotrackandmonitorthetaggedbottles,andinofficestomanageimportantdocumentation.AtypicalRFIDsmartshelfasshowninFig.1comprisesthreemainparts:antennasystem,multiplexerandreader/writer.Thesystemcandetectandidentifytaggeditemsinrangeandreadtheiridentification,tomapthepositionofdetectiontoanabsolutepositionontheshelf,communicatestheretrievedIDsandtheirpositionstoanexternalsystembyuserrequest.
