InthenorthofScotlandthereisalakecalledLochNess.ItisthebiggestlakeinBritain.Itisover30kilometerslongandnearly300metersdeep.Itiscoldanddarkandnotmanypeoplewentthereuntilafter1930.Thenaroadwasmadearoundthelake.Holidaymarkersbegantousetheroad,andthiswaswhenthestorybegan.
Someonesaidthathehadseenamonsterinthelake.Hesaidiswas12meterslong.Ithadalongneckandasmallhed.Thensomeoneelsesaidhehadseenitalso.Otherssaidthesamethingandin1933aLondondoctortookaphoto.Itlookedlikeamonsterwithalongneckandathickbodybutthephotowasnotclear.AnewspaperprintedthepictureandcalledittheLochNessMonster,or"Nessie".
Thentheargumentbegan.Somepeople,however,werecertaintherewassomethinglivinginthelake.Otherssaidtherewasnothingthere.
In1961,alotofpeoplejoinedtogethertomakearealefforttoseeandphotographthemonsteriftherewasone.Severaltinespeoplethoughttheysawsomethingbutafter10yearstherewasstillnorealproofofthemonster.
Later,underwatertelevisioncameraswereused,butagainnorealproofofthemonsterwasfound.However,theydidfindsomethinginteresting:ahugeunderwatercave.Itwasbigenoughtobehomeofamonster,butofcourse,itwasnotaproof.
In1975,however,someAmericanscientistsformedaresearchgroup.Theyusedanunderwatercamera.Ittookpicturesevery70seconds.Someofthepicturesseemedtoshowared-browncreature.Itsbodywasaboutfourmeterslongandithadaveryuglyheadontheendofafour-meterneck.Manypeoplethenbegantobelieveinthemonster,buteventodaywecan'tbecertainwhether"Nessie"isrealornot.
Themajorityoftheearth'soceansandremoteinlandlakesareunexplored,sotheremaybecreatureswhichhaverarelybeenseenoridentifiedbyhumans.Overthecenturiessailorshavetoldstoriesofstrangecreaturesintheoceans.Manyofthesedescriptionsareverysimilartocreaturesthatwethoughtwereextinct.Peoplethoughtthecoelacanthdisappeared70millionyearsagountilitwasdiscoveredaliveandwellin1938.InVietnamrecently,severalpreviouslyunknownanimalshavebeenfoundinthehighlands,includingaspeciesofdeer.
