Hawking'skeyscientificworkstodatehaveincludedproviding,withRogerPenrose,theoremsregardingsingularitiesintheframeworkofgeneralrelativity,andthetheoreticalpredictionthatblackholesshouldemitradiation,whichistodayknownasHawkingradiation(orsometimesasBekenstein-Hawkingradiation).Heisaworld-renownedtheoreticalphysicistwhosescientificcareerspansover40years.Hisbooksandpublicappearanceshavemadehimanacademiccelebrity.HeisanHonoraryFellowoftheRoyalSocietyofArts,andalifetimememberofthePontificalAcademyofScience.OnAugust12,2009,hewasawardedthePresidentialMedalofFreedom,thehighestcivilianawardintheUnitedStates.

Hawkinghasaneuromusculardystrophythatisrelatedtoamyotrophiclateralsclerosis(ALS),aconditionthathasprogressedovertheyearsandhaslefthimalmostcompletelyparalysed.
