x09Weassessedtheaccumulationofuranium(VI)byabacterium,Bacillussubtilis,suspendedinaslurryofkaoliniteclay,toelucidatetheroleofmicrobesonthemobilityofU(VI).Variousmixturesofbacteriaandthekoalinitewereexposedtosolutionsof8106M-and4104M-U(VI)in0.01MNaClatpH4.7.After48h,themixtureswereseparatedfromthesolutionsbycentrifugation,andtreatedwitha1MCH3COOKfor24htodeterminetheassociationsofUwithinthemixture.Themixture
exposedto4104MUwasanalyzedbytransmissionelectronmicroscope(TEM)equippedwithEDS.Theaccumulationof
UbythemixtureincreasedwithanincreaseintheamountofB.subtiliscellspresentatbothUconcentrations.TreatmentofkaolinitewithCH3COOK,removedapproximately80%oftheassociateduranium.However,inthepresenceofB.subtilistheamountofUremovedwasmuchless.
