Manyyearsagoinmyundergraduatesociologyclasstheprofessor(hisnamenowescapesme)askedtheclass,"Wouldyouprefertoworktoliveorlivetowork?"AsIrecallnow,thisledtoavibrantdiscussionaboutpriorities,whatwesawourselvesdoinginthefuture,andhowwellwewantedtolivethelifethatweenvisioned."Livetowork"obviouslyconnotesthatonegoeshappilyofftotheofficeeachday,while"worktolive"impliessomethingmoreonerous.
Ioftenthinkaboutthatdiscussionastheyearshavepassed,andIhaveevenusedthatquestionratherfrequentlyasawritingassignmentinmyfreshmancompositionclasses.Duringtheprewritingphase,studentsusuallyspokefreelyconcerningtheiropinionsinbrainstormingsessions.Manyarguedvehementlywiththoseontheoppositeside,butbythetimetheygottotheactualwriting,moststudentsseemedratheradamantthatnojoborbosswasgoingtoruintheirlives.
