SherlockHolmesisafictionalcharacterofthelatenineteenthandearlytwentiethcenturieswhofirstappearedinpublicationin1887.HeisthecreationofBritishauthorandphysicianSirArthurConanDoyle.AbrilliantLondon-based"consultingdetective",Holmesisfamousforhisintellectualprowessandisrenownedforhisskillfuluseofastuteobservation,deductivereasoningandinferencetosolvedifficultcases.
ConanDoylewrotefournovelsandfifty-sixshortstoriesthatfeatureHolmes.Thefirsttwostories(shortnovels)appearedinBeeton'sChristmasAnnualin1887andLippincott'sMonthlyMagazinein1890,respectively.ThecharactergrewtremendouslyinpopularitywiththebeginningofthefirstseriesofshortstoriesinTheStrandMagazinein1891;furtherseriesofshortstoriesandtwoserialisednovelsappeareduntil1927.Thestoriescoveraperiodfromaround1875upto1907,withafinalcasein1914.
AllbutfourstoriesarenarratedbyHolmes'sfriendandbiographer,Dr.JohnH.Watson,twoarenarratedbyHolmeshimselfandtwoothersarewritteninthethirdperson.Intwostories("TheMusgraveRitual"and"TheAdventureoftheGloriaScott"),HolmestellsWatsonthemainstoryfromhismemories,whereasWatsonbecomesthenarratoroftheframestory.
ConanDoylesaidthatthecharacterofHolmeswasinspiredbyDr.JosephBell,forwhomDoylehadworkedasaclerkattheEdinburghRoyalInfirmary.LikeHolmes,Bellwasnotedfordrawinglargeconclusionsfromthesmallestobservations.MichaelHarrisonarguedina1971articleinElleryQueen'sMysteryMagazinethatthecharacterwasinspiredbyWendellScherer,a"consultingdetective"inamurdercasethatallegedlyreceivedagreatdealofnewspaperattentioninEnglandin1882.
