Onceuponatimeinmidwinter,whenthesnowflakeswerefallinglikefeathersfromheaven,abeautifulqueensatsewingatherwindow,whichhadaframeofblackebonywood.Asshesewed,shelookedupatthesnowandprickedherfingerwithherneedle.Threedropsofbloodfellintothesnow.Theredonthewhitelookedsobeautiful,thatshethought,"IfonlyIhadachildaswhiteassnow,asredasblood,andasblackasthisframe."Soonafterwardshehadalittledaughterthatwasaswhiteassnow,asredasblood,andasblackasebonywood,andthereforetheycalledherLittleSnow-White.
Nowthequeenwasthemostbeautifulwomaninalltheland,andveryproudofherbeauty.Shehadamirror,whichshestoodinfrontofeverymorning,andasked:
Mirror,mirror,onthewall,
Whointhislandisfairestofall?
Andthemirroralwayssaid:
You,myqueen,arefairestofall.
Andthensheknewforcertainthatnooneintheworldwasmorebeautifulthanshe.
NowSnow-Whitegrewup,andwhenshewassevenyearsold,shewassobeautiful,thatshesurpassedeventhequeenherself.Nowwhenthequeenaskedhermirror:

Whenthequeenheardthemirrorsaythis,shebecamepalewithenvy,andfromthathouron,shehatedSnow-White.Whenevershelookedather,shethoughtthatSnow-Whitewastoblamethatshewasnolongerthemostbeautifulwomanintheworld.Thisturnedherheartaround.Herjealousygavehernopeace.Finallyshesummonedahuntsmanandsaidtohim,"TakeSnow-Whiteoutintothewoodstoaremotespot,andstabhertodeath.Asproofthatsheisdeadbringherlungsandherliverbacktome.Ishallcookthemwithsaltandeatthem."
ThehuntsmantookSnow-Whiteintothewoods.Whenhetookouthishuntingknifetostabher,shebegantocry,andbeggedferventlythathemightspareherlife,promisingtorunawayintothewoodsandneverreturn.Thehuntsmantookpityonherbecauseshewassobeautiful,andhethought,"Thewildanimalswillsoondevourheranyway.I'mgladthatIdon'thavetokillher."Justthenayoungboarcamerunningby.Hekilledit,cutoutitslungsandliver,andtookthembacktothequeenasproofofSnow-White'sdeath.Shecookedthemwithsaltandatethem,supposingthatshehadeatenSnow-White'slungsandliver.
Snow-Whitewasnowallaloneinthegreatforest.Shewasterriblyafraid,andbegantorun.Sheranoversharpstonesandthroughthornstheentireday.Finally,justasthesunwasabouttoset,shecametoalittlehouse.Thehousebelongedtosevendwarfs.Theywereworkinginamine,andnotathome.Snow-Whitewentinsideandfoundeverythingtobesmall,butneatandorderly.Therewasalittletablewithsevenlittleplates,sevenlittlespoons,sevenlittleknivesandforks,sevenlittlemugs,andagainstthewallthereweresevenlittlebeds,allfreshlymade.
Snow-Whitewashungryandthirsty,sosheateafewvegetablesandalittlebreadfromeachlittleplate,andfromeachlittleglassshedrankadropofwine.Becauseshewassotired,shewantedtoliedownandgotosleep.Shetriedeachofthesevenlittlebeds,oneaftertheother,butnonefeltrightuntilshecametothesevent
