ButAfricansalsowonderwhatimagetheoutsideworldhasofthem.Perhapsthroughthemassmedia,peopleintheWestimagineAfricansfoldingtheirarmsandwaitingforoutsiderstocomeandassist?
Alltoooftentheyaredeniedthefullpicture.WhiletheymayappreciatethatsomeAfricanleadershavemadethelivesoftheirpeoplessomuchworse,they'rerarelytoldhowsomanyAfricanpeopleareworkingtomakelivesbetter.It'sbeenmyexperiencefromcoveringwarsandhumanitariancrisesaroundAfricathatthetelevisionsequencesarealmostalwaysthesame:firstyouseethefliesaroundasicklyorstarvingbaby'sfaceandsoonafterthat,abeautifulblondladywillcomeontothescreentoexplainwhatisreallyhappeningintherefugeecamps.I'veseenitinDarfur,Angola,SierraLeone,Congo,Zimbabwe.ButthetruthisthatoftenlocalNGOsandchurchorganisationswerealreadyonthegroundhelpingandmakingahugedifference.ButwhenthebiggunsarrivefromOxfam,SaveTheChildren,CareInternational,WFP,WHO,withtheirvastresources,theygetalltheattention.
